Print Yellow Pages Environmental Summary

good post by Michael Kust of TMP on efforts by industry to be environmentally sensative:

Overall, the creation of a print Yellow Pages directory is less harmful to the environment than one might think. In my opinion, the industry has taken its awareness of the environment to the next level by allowing households to opt out of receiving a directory they do not use.

Post also provides a link to a study by TMP on local search usage.

  1. TERRY SULLIVAN-MAHIIN said,

Today the Coolidge Unified School District (AZ) office received 32 UNSOLICITED copies of “dex”. This was on top of the 24 copies of “yellowbook’ that we recently received. A total of 56 copies of phone books that by concensus never seem to have the information we seek. We are a total of 12 people at this office. It is a shame that more than half of the books we received will go to the recycle bin not only never having been opened, but not even taken from their protective plastic wrapping. In an attempt to rececyle via one of their websites, anywhere other than Tucson was SOL. Made of recycled materials or not, THIS IS A WASTE!

  2. Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding phone book deliveries to the Coolidge Unified School District.

Dex strives to be environmentally responsible, and we have a legacy of using environmentally-friendly products to produce our directories and promoting responsible recycling practices. We also provide the information about local businesses needed by consumers a variety of formats – both print and online – so people can find information in the way they prefer to search.

We agree with your position that it does not make sense for directory companies to deliver more directories than necessary to those who prefer to use our print products. Therefore, Dex provides the public with the option to change the number of directories they receive through our “Select Your Dex” program.

Select Your Dex allows businesses and organizations to customize their directory orders by calling 1-866-60-My-Dex and speaking to a customer care representative. Consumers or businesses who wish to receive three or fewer directories can also go online to http://www.dexknows.com/green and “Select Your Dex” or learn more about recycling options.

Based on your post, Dex has noted 12 directories as the appropriate quantity for Coolidge Unified School District, but please contact us at the above-listed number if you would like a different amount. For information on how to change your directory orders with companies other than Dex, please visit http://www.yellowpagesoptout.com, a site is hosted by the Yellow Pages Association, where contact information for other publishers is aggregated.

Thanks again for your concern and input.
